Tourism Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos recently visited Larissa and refered to the significant growth prospects of the prefecture.

Mr. Spiliotopoulos stressed that the prefecture’s pride and glory, Mount Olympus, must not be neglected as it is one of Greece’s locations of unique identity.

He announced that in light of the development of peripatetic tourism as an alternative form of tourism, the improvement and maintenance of the hiking path of Olympus is under consideration. The budget for the hiking path is expected to amount to some 1.2 million euros.

In addition, the organization of the 17th Mediterranean Games in Volos and Larissa in 2013 is expected to enhance tourism to the region as the cities will gain international recognition.

“Larissa will then have the prospects to become a ‘long weekend’ destination and thus attract more visitors,” Mr. Spiliotopoulos said.

The minister also mentioned that once the Larissa military airport is transformed into a civilian airport the area will attract many visitors to and from Greece.
